Telling Lies Introduction:
Telling Lies, also stylized as "telling l!es," is a narrative video game created by Sam Barlow and Furious Bee, and it was released in August 2019 for iOS, macOS, and Windows, with later versions for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One arriving in April 2020. Similar to Barlow's previous game, Her Story, Telling Lies utilizes live-action full-motion video featuring four characters portrayed by Logan Marshall-Green, Alexandra Shipp, Kerry Bishé, and Angela Sarafyan. These characters engage in video calls, and players must use in-game tools to decipher events and identify possible falsehoods in order to unravel the overarching mystery.
Barlow describes Telling Lies as a "desktop thriller," in which players immerse themselves in a narrative played out through stored video clips and other information presented on a virtual computer desktop. The game offers players numerous video segments spanning a two-year period, all retrieved from a stolen hard drive taken from the National Security Agency. Players can search for specific keywords within these video segments to piece together timelines, events, and interactions. The objective is to uncover why the four central characters were under electronic surveillance and the role of the player-character in these events. The player-character, who appears as a female, is reflected in the in-game computer screen. However, these video clips only provide one side of the conversation, requiring players to match clips with other participants and potential interactions involving around 30 other individuals. Players can also navigate within segments, highlight keywords in video subtitles for searching, and keep notes in an in-game memo pad. Importantly, players have limited time within a single playthrough to examine the material on the hard drive and must start anew, losing all notes and bookmarks, if they wish to explore further. Barlow estimates that Telling Lies offers content approximately four to five times longer than Her Story. The game offers three different endings based on which character's videos players explore most frequently.
Gameplay:
The game's narrative centers on David Smith, an FBI agent, who, during 2017 and 2018, was undercover, working on a case codenamed Green Dagger under the supervision of his handler, Mike. The mission aimed to investigate potential acts of terrorism by the environmental group "Green Storm," led by activist Riordan. David's initial task was to infiltrate a smaller team within Green Storm, known as the "Organizing Group," which focused on opposing the corporation Prosperen due to its plans to construct a polluting pipeline. David developed a romantic relationship with one of the group's members, Ava, and gained entry into the Organizing Group.
The Organizing Group comprised four key members: Eric, Chris, Peter, and Simon. Secretly, Simon was an informant working for Black Kite and providing information to the FBI, a situation that David disapproved of, considering Simon unprofessional. As David integrated further into the group, he uncovered disturbing information about Peter's past involvement with Ava when she was underage, including drugging and filming their encounters. In a fit of anger, David confronted Peter, resulting in Ava's displeasure and the FBI's concern. David enlisted the help of an old contact named Harry to frame Peter by planting drugs on him. David's mental state deteriorated, and he exposed Simon as a Black Kite spy. These actions, along with his growing attachment to Ava, raised alarms with Mike.
David invited Riordan and the Organizing Group to a meeting on his boat to discuss their plans to disrupt a crucial bridge, essential for Prosperen's pipeline project. During the meeting, Ava revealed that she was pregnant with David's child.
A new Black Kite spy infiltrated Green Storm, and David collaborated with him to involve Riordan in a direct attack on the bridge. However, the plan went awry, and David learned that Mike and Black Kite had decided to delay taking action against Green Storm, instead opting to arrest the Organizing Group. David protested but failed to sway Mike, who instructed him to terminate his infiltration. Subsequently, the Organizing Group, including Ava, was arrested. David harbored resentment towards Mike, but Mike pointed out that David had withheld critical information, including Ava's pregnancy. David tried to maintain contact with the Organizing Group, but Karen Douglas, his field supervisor at the time, intervened to provide him with cover for his withdrawal. Ava felt heartbroken and betrayed by David's disappearance.
Meanwhile, David encountered problems with his wife, Emma, and their daughter, Alba. While David was undercover, Emma's mother, Laura, moved in with them. During David's mission, Laura developed dementia and passed away, despite medical care provided by Steven, an anesthesiologist hired by the couple. Additionally, it was revealed that when David was Emma's boyfriend, he killed Paul, Emma's abusive ex-boyfriend, with Emma inadvertently becoming an unwilling accomplice.
To cope with the stress of his situation, David engaged in conversations with a sex worker named Maxine Williams, who ran a webcam chatroom under various aliases. David paid her for companionship and shared personal stories, including revealing his true identity. As his life unraveled, David began to believe he had a genuine connection with Maxine. However, Maxine banned him from her chatroom, and when he persisted, she disclosed that everything he knew about her was a fabrication. She also revealed that she had recorded their conversations and would release them if he continued to pursue her. With the help of Harry, David tracked down Maxine, who had already released the videos. Maxine shot David in the leg just as the police arrived.
Final Words:
This event fractured David's relationship with Emma, who had become fearful of him. David ended up living alone, estranged from both his wife and Ava. He made efforts to reconnect with them, but both rejected him. David ultimately took his own life by detonating explosives on his boat, potentially causing destruction to the bridge. After reviewing the videos, Karen decided to leak them.
The mid-credits scene varies depending on which character's videos the player has watched. Emma and Ava move on to new lives without David, continuing to raise their daughters. Maxine departs from Cleveland, Ohio, and establishes a cam agency in New York, eventually becoming a crime novelist specializing in stories with strong female protagonists.
